The Prime Minister of Poland has warned that the European Union’s “unfortunate behaviour” in negotiations with the United Kingdom risks landing the bloc with a No Deal Brexit.
“Sadly, the Brexit case has brought to light rather unfortunate behaviour,” said Mateusz Morawiecki, of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), ahead of a one-on-one meeting with Theresa May.
“Strong statements and harsh words of some politicians in Brussels do not help, but hinder our common goal in achieving the most desirable outcome for all,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
“Stakes are high, opinions vary, and so emotions run strong. But there is no doubt that Mrs May represents the British nation and that must be recognised by all.”
Mrs May has not always been treated with the greatest of respect by EU leaders, with President of the Council Donald Tusk — whose reappointment was opposed by the Polish government — mocking her on social media, and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker impersonating her dancing and causing a row after the last EU summit when he appeared to call her “nebulous”.

“It is likely that Mrs May’s chance of winning the vote in the House of Commons [on a Brexit deal] will depend on EU leaders’ attitude towards the UK,” warned Morawiecki.
“This attitude must remain unequivocally supportive, for British citizens will then in turn be more inclined to be more responsive to Brussels,” he added.
Following his meeting with the British prime minister, the two leaders announced a new defence and security pact, and renewed their commitment to continued strong relations after Brexit.
“Poland is one of our closest friends and allies. This partnership works for both our nations, making us safer, more prosperous and more secure,” said May.
“Almost one million Poles make their lives in Britain – the largest diaspora in the UK… Today is an opportunity to repeat my message to Polish people – you can stay, and we want you to stay.”
